Writers on a New England stage: Authors Erik Larson and Amor Towles kick off the 2022 season
NHPR’s Peter Biello will take the stage with authors Erik Larson and Amor Towles in the 2022 series of Writers on a New England Stage.
The in-person series, a partnership between Music Hall Portsmouth and New Hampshire Public Radio, kicks off with Larson’s event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the historic Music Hall Theatre. Tickets are on sale now.
Larson’s gift for taking readers behind the scenes of history is exhilaratingly showcased in his latest bestseller, The Splendid and the Vile, and he will be here to talk about his work as the book debuts in its paperback edition.
Larson’s book follows Prime Minister Winston Churchill as he teaches the British people “the art of being fearless” during Hitler’s relentless march. As the event’s organizers note, the author frames his narrative as both tightrope politics and intimate domestic drama, drawing on rich archives and little-known intelligence reports. Larson transports readers through London’s darkest year and brings to life the daily experiences of Churchill, his family and advisers in the Prime Minister’s ‘Secret Circle’.

AuthorAmor Towles will then join the Writers on a New England State series, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, to discuss his gem of a novel, The Lincoln Highway, which follows the unpredictable journey of three friends fresh off a juvenile work farm in 1950s America.
Both events will include a literary conversation with Biello, host of New Hampshire Public Radio’s afternoon newsmagazine show All things Considered.
“Both Larson and Towles will immerse us in the world of the 1940s and 50s in these works and demonstrate how perseverance can get us through tough times,” says Biello. “Audiences of these events are in for a treat as we uncover the deeper meanings and research that has gone into these texts. As always, I look forward to hearing from our audience as I am about the events themselves.
Tickets for the Larson event are $13.75 each, and the tickets come with a $20 book voucher redeemable at the event for signed copies. (So: tickets/vouchers for two will total $47.50.) Call the box office for options based on your group size and booking needs: (603) 436-2400.
