Dark circles under the eyes are the bane of our existence. No matter what eye cream we use or how long we sleep, they are always there: black and blue dark circles that make our skin look tired and dull. Concealer is a slightly thicker makeup product than foundation and can be used to hide dark circles, blemishes and age spots. If you have dark circles under your eyes, you’ll want to lighten the area using concealer that’s a shade or two lighter than your natural skin tone. You can also use a color correcting product under your concealer (more on that later!).
Those with warm skin tones should look for concealers with orange undertones, while those with cool skin tones should look for pink undertones, celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose Told vogue. Now that you know the basics, read on for our favorite lightening hack.
We first saw this trend on TikTok, but it turns out to be a long-standing makeup industry secret. “Using a white under-eye concealer with regular concealer on top to brighten the eye area is a great way to shape the under-eye area with a gorgeous, visible difference,” says the makeup artist Marie Winkenwerder. The white concealer acts as a brightening color corrector that lays the foundation for a more effective natural concealer.
To use this tactic, start by making sure the under-eye area is free of makeup debris (especially if you’ve done your eye makeup first). If you have fair skin, apply a dab of white concealer under the eyes and blend. Then, apply a natural tone concealer on top. If you have deep skin, reverse the process by applying natural concealer first and a dot of white concealer on top, says Winkenwerder. Remember, a little goes a long way.

If you don’t have a white concealer handy, use a highlighter. “Place a highlight stick as your highlighter color, then apply concealer on top,” says the celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. “It will look amazing.” The highlighter provides a lightening effect similar to that of the white concealer. A word of advice: avoid using a highlighter with a considerable amount of shine.

The internet is full of trendy ways to apply concealer, but professional makeup artists do things a little differently. “I always apply a dot of concealer on the inside corner and a dot on the outside corner,” explains Tanea Savage, makeup artist and stylist at G2O Spa + Salon. “Blend upward toward the temple for an instant eye lift.”
If you are using the white concealer hack, Winkenwerder recommends using a dot of white on that inner corner. “[It’s] is a great way to amplify that statement,” she says. You’ll look lifted, illuminated and more awake in no time. And, most importantly, those bags under the eyes will be nowhere in sight.
