After beating Rensselaer 2-0 to claim the ninth Mayor’s Cup on Saturday, Union will host Long Island University tonight in the final non-conference tilt of the regular season.

Explore sharks
The Sharks are coming off a 4-3 win over Brown on Sunday as part of a three-game winning streak. Graduate student Billy Jerry scored all four goals for the Sharks.

Jerry leads the Sharks with 22 points (10-12-22) in 24 games played. Fellow grad students Tyler Welsh (17 GP, 5-10-15) and Jake Stevens (24 GP, 4-11-15) are tied for second with 15 points each.

Senior Vincent Purpura and graduate student Kris Carlson have shared the duties in net this season. Purpura is 3-6-0 this season with one shutout, while posting a 3.48 GAA and .885 save percentage. Carlson is 3-7-3 with a pair of shutouts while posting a 3.52 GAA and .878 save percentage.

Addition of Q
Senior Brandon Estes was recently named assistant captain for the Dutch. Estes leads the team in points this season and has been a constant presence on and off the ice.

Olympians Made Here
For the first time in the program’s history, three alumni secured spots on the Olympic hockey rosters: Daniel Carr (Canada), Spencer Foo (China) and Parker Foo (China).

Kosack nominated for Hockey Humanitarian Award
For the second consecutive season, senior Josh Kosak of the Union College men’s hockey team has been announced as a candidate for the prestigious Hockey Humanitarian Award. Kosack is one of 11 nominees for the award this season, including one of three previously nominated in 2020-21 and one of two returning finalists in the ballot in 2021-22.

Meet Murphy
junior transfer Connor Murphy was excellent between the tips for the Dutch. Murphy stopped 89 shots in the series against Maine, including 51 saves on Dec. 10, earning ECAC Goalie of the Week honors for the second time this season. The 51 saves ranks ninth on Union’s Division I single-game record list and second in Division I this season for a single game. Murphy has stopped 678 shots this season, which ranks fourth nationally, en route to a 9-11-2 record with three shutouts.

Murphy named to Mike Richter Award watchlist
Junior Connor Murphy was one of 28 goaltenders named to the preliminary Mike Richter Award watch list on Thursday, January 20.

Seger stable
Junior Assistant Captain Gabriel Seger has been a constant presence in the face-off circle for the Dutch. The junior wins 52.7% of faceoffs.

Apart from his constant presence in the circle, Seger had an impact on the Dutch attack. The junior is tied for third on the team with 11 points (3-8-11). Union is 6-3-1 when Seger scores a point.

Ironman Estes
senior defender Brandon Estes played his 100th straight game Dec. 10 in Maine. The last game Estes missed was on February 3, 2018. The senior has played 133 career games for the Dutch (14-39-53), including 108 in a row.

Three is the magic number
In 22 games this season, Brandon Estes scored 13 points (4-9-13). These points were scored in three three-game point streaks (10/15-10/22, 11/5-11/12, 1/15-1/22), resulting in a record 1-1-1 team in each sequence. . Therefore, Union is 3-3-3 when Estes scores a point. Estes also added three points against Brown and Yale.

Kosack nominated for Senior CLASS award
Josh Kosak is one of 20 nominees for the Senior CLASS Award. Kosack is one of four applicants to an ECAC hockey school and the sixth Union player in program history.

Kozi’s children
Senior Captain Josh Kosak launched its second Kozi’s Kids fundraiser on November 15 to benefit COCOA House, a non-profit organization that provides a safe place for children in downtown Schenectady after school, with a focus on development life skills, education and mentoring. After raising more than $5,000 for new laptops and Christmas gifts in a year without Dutch hockey, Kosack is aiming higher this year with a goal of $20,000. COCOA House purchased the building next door to create a second space for the kids with a focus on a state-of-the-art entrepreneurship space, lounge area, study rooms and other resources. The money will go towards the development of a Kozi’s Kids lounge and the purchase of Christmas gifts for children in the Tri-City area. As of 8 p.m. on January 13, over $40,000 has been raised. Rated Robertson
second striker Liam Robertson this season is off to a good start. Robertson is ranked fifth nationally and first in the conference with seven power-play goals in 22 games. The forward is tied for second on the team with 13 points (10-3-13), including seven on special teams (7-1-8).

Dutch take home player of the week honors
After a career game against Merrimack College, Liam Robertson was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week. After their performances against Maine, freshman year Caden Villegas won Rookie of the Week and Junior honors Connor Murphy won his second goalkeeper of the week title.

Turn on the lamp quickly
Union have scored the opening goal in seven of their first ten games played this season, including three games in which the Dutch scored within the opening 2:01 of the game. Despite that advantage, Union was only 2-3-2 in those seven games.

Freshman Strength
First year Michael Hodge established himself as a consistent offensive presence in the first 12 games. The striker started the season on a five-game point streak, registering three goals and three assists during that span. Hodge is tied for first on the team with nine points.

How sweeping is
On Monday, October 18, ECAC announced a clean sweep of its weekly awards by the Dutch. Senior Brandon Estes earned Player of the Week honors, scoring one goal and adding three assists from the blue line. Junior Connor Murphy earned Goalie of the Week recognition, posting a 1.92 goals-against average and .945 save percentage with 69 saves in two games. First year Collin Graf played a part in both Union goals in Friday’s 2-1 win over the Tigers, scoring his first college goal on the power play and then picking up the main assist on Estes’ game-winning goal.

It was the first time Union won the weekly awards since March 2014, when Daniel Carr ’14 (player), Colin Stevens ’15 (goalkeeper) and Mike Vecchione ’17 (rookie) were all recognized.

Oh captains, my captains
Senior Josh Kosak will wear the “C” for captains this season while the juniors Dylan Anhorn and Gabriel Seger will wear the “A” for the Dutch in 2021-22. Kosack is team captain for the second consecutive season, having served as team leader during the 2020-21 pandemic year.

Want to surprise
Union was chosen to finish tied for eighth in the ECAC Hockey preseason coaches poll, earning a tie for 40 points with Rensselaer. Local media were even more pessimistic about Union’s chances, voting the Dutch 11th out of 12 teams (26 points) in the pre-season media poll.

Welcome to the show
Heading into the 2021-22 season, more than half (16 out of 31) of Union players have never played in a college game. Seven sophomores were with the team last year but did not compete as Union did not play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program also welcomed eight first-year players to the team this season as well.
